But this year Joygan and \nmany like her have reason for a little optimism. Several \neasy-to-implement strategies recently introduced by a non-government \norganisation hold the promise of making household vegetable gardens \nflood-proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe allowfullscreen=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GX-1v3CGb2Q\" width=\"100%\" height=\"450\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt times of flooding we most often take shelter on a bamboo platform\n in our house,\u201d says Joygan, \u201cIf we have to, we move to an embankment \nand live on the roadside. Mostly we can only eat rice with salt. \nVegetables are almost impossible to manage.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis year I have planted the vegetables in plastic bags and pots. We\n have constructed several bamboo platforms around my house,\u201d she \ncontinues. \u201cWhen the next flood comes we will hang the vegetables from \nthe platforms to save them from destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joygan is proud of her well-decorated bamboo cabinet where dozens of \npotted herbs and vegetables grow. She has more than 50 plants of around \n12 varieties, all pre-prepared to shift to higher ground. Pumpkin and \ncucumber vines meanwhile are grown on raised trellises. \u201cThis flood \nseason our family will eat rice with vegetables,\u201d she beams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These simple strategies have been introduced by non-government \norganisation Manob Mukti Sangstha. \u201cFarmers have been given training on \nhow to continue to benefit from their vegetable and herb crops in times \nof flood,\u201d explains Md Obaidul Islam, manager of the organisation&#8217;s \n\u201cClimate Smart Village\u201d project. \u201cWe supply the equipment needed for \nthem to establish their first mobile gardens.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For larger trees which can also suffer from being submerged, there \nare other strategies. \u201cI have planted the big trees at the raised \nfloor-level of our home this year,\u201d says another training recipient, \nKadbanu Begum, also from Betil Char. \u201cThe trees are bottle-fed water to \naccount for being planted on higher ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assetsds.cdnedge.bluemix.net\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/very_big_2\/public\/news\/images\/farming_2.jpg?itok=siJJAv9-\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vegetables\n are also grown in movable cases on a scaffold. Photo: Ahmed Humayun Kabir Topu\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI also have over a hundred vegetables plants in bags and \npots,\u201d she adds. \u201cEvery corner of my home is now used for crop \ncultivation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The produce grown isn&#8217;t only for household use. As well as ensuring \nan uninterrupted vegetable supply at home, vegetables can be sold for \nmuch-needed cash. Seedlings too can be sown even while a flood is in \nprogress, ready for replanting when water recedes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn flood-prone areas people don&#8217;t always get the full nutrition that\n they need,\u201d notes the non-government organisation&#8217;s director, Md \nRafikul Islam. \u201cDamaged and destroyed crops represent a loss even after a\n flood has passed.
